Why Age Matters for LIC Premiums

Your age at the time of policy issuance is one of the primary factors that determines your LIC premium. Even a one-year difference can change your premium by 2-5%. So it's important to know exactly how LIC calculates your age.

LIC Uses Two Age Methods

1. Nearest Birthday Method (most common)

LIC rounds your age to the nearest birthday based on the policy commencement date. For example:

  • If your DOB is 15-Jun-1995 and policy date is 02-Jul-2026: you will turn 31 on 15-Jun-2026 (already turned 31), so your age is 31.
  • If your DOB is 15-Dec-1995 and policy date is 02-Jul-2026: you turned 30 in Dec 2025, next birthday in Dec 2026. Since the policy date is closer to the past birthday (Dec 2025, ~6 months) than the next one (Dec 2026, ~5 months), your age is rounded to 30. But if the reference date is within 6 months of your next birthday, it might round to 31.

2. Last Birthday Method (used in some annuity/pension plans)

Your age is taken as per your last completed birthday on the reference date. For example:

  • If your DOB is 15-Jun-1995 and policy date is 02-Jul-2026: you turned 31 on 15-Jun-2026. So your age is 31.
  • If your DOB is 15-Dec-1995 and policy date is 02-Jul-2026: you turned 30 in Dec 2025. So your age is 30.

Which Method Does LIC Use?

  • Most LIC endowment, money-back and term plans use the Nearest Birthday method.
  • LIC's pension and annuity plans (Jeevan Shanti, Saral Pension, etc.) often use the Last Birthday method.
  • Check your policy brochure or the LIC website for the exact method used.
